Alan R. Farris Biography

Alan Farris has served the residents of Southern Illinois as a general practitioner for over thirty years.  His law practice includes the following areas of concentration:  litigation, family, commercial, estate planning, real estate, probate, criminal law, and personal injury.  Moreover, Alan has served as the City Attorney for the City of Sparta since 1991.  In addition, he presently serves as the Village Attorney for the Villages of Steeleville, Coulterville and Evansville.  In addition, Mr. Farris is general counsel for First National Bank of Sparta and Sparta Community Hospital District.  He also represents a myriad of local businesses as both corporate counsel and registered agent. 


Mr. Farris is a member of the Illinois Bar Association and currently holds memberships in the following Bar Association Practice Sections:  General Practice (Solo and Small Firms), Family Law, Real Property Law, Health Care Law, Local Government Law, and Commercial, Banking and Bankruptcy Law.

 
Alan has been a member of the Randolph County Bar Association since 1979 and served as the Organization’s President from the term of 2008-2010.

 
In his role as a municipal lawyer, he has served as the local prosecutor for City and Village ordinance violations.  Alan has also worked in depth in the complex area of tax increment financing.  He is a member of the Illinois Tax Increment Association and has presented programs at the group’s annual meetings both in Springfield and Chicago.

 
Mr. Farris has completed Continuing Legal Education Courses in the area of Family Mediation Training.  He presently serves as a Mediator in Southern Illinois in order to assist in the resolution of parenting matters.


Mr. Farris is a 1972 graduate of Collinsville (Illinois) High School and an alumnus of Monmouth College, Monmouth, Illinois (B.A. 1976 – magna cum laude).

 
After graduating from Drake University School of Law in 1979, Alan was admitted to practice law in the State of Illinois that same year.  He also has been admitted to practice before the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Illinois and U.S. Court of Appeals, Seventh Circuit. 

 
Alan resides in Sparta with his wife, Sarah, and sons Jeffrey and Jared.  An avid St. Louis Cardinals fan, he can be found most summer evenings cheering on his favorite major league baseball team.
